iPhone 1G VS. Android 1.5 (Motorola Cliq)

So, I've used both the iPhone 1st Generation with Jail Broken software and two different Android phones. I've also used a 3G iPod Touch, which I imagine has the same performance as the iPhone 3GS, so I have a pretty good idea about both devices. I will go category by category to compare and contrast.

Call Quality

The Android wins hands down. The speakerphone was absolutely awful on the iPhone. I imagine they have gotten better with each release, but I was so unimpressed with iPhone. By contrast, both Android devices were very impressive with their speaker phones, bluetooth connectivity, etc.

OS Speed

The iPhone wins here; Steve Jobs will do anything (including keeping Flash off any device) to keep the OS moving fast. Whereas Android slows down pretty easily. I've been told that with the advent of Android 2.2 the OS has gotten dramatically faster. But, again, I'm just using my experience.

As a MP3/Media Device

Nothing competes even closely with the iPod music player. Not even rival MP3 players like Creative or Zunes are even close. It's just brilliant; whereas the Android music player is just AWFUL! There is a good podcatcher on the Android, but they still could have spent more time putting together a decent music player.

Apps

This is a toss-up: the iPhone has better apps, but they're also ridiculously expensive. Also Apple is over-protective of their app store. I like the android productivity apps head and shoulders more than the iPhone's. But the game apps are way better for the iPhone.

As an eBook Reader

Android 2.1 has a Kindle app, and so does the iPhone. But, other eBook readers are way more available for Android. You can potentially store a lot more books on the Android as well, because the memory is expandable. I'd go with the Android.

Navigation and Multi-Apping

Hands down, Android wins. Having more than one functional button on the exterior really opens up screen space and functionality. Also, the iPhone doesn't do multi-apping unless you have an app that supports it. Call me needy, but I like listening to Pandora while texting or e-mailing.

Widgets

This is the ability to put controls/displays to apps on your home screen. It's non-existent on the iPhone! It's really easy and helpful on the Android. I've got my to-do tasks, weather, news, and other things right on my home screen. It's awesome.

Keyboard/Typing

The iPhone isn't awful and is actually decently accurate when it comes to typing. But, there is nothing that compares to a hard keyboard in my opinion. I just don't mess up in my typing as much with the hard keyboard. I also feel a lot faster and more comfortable with the hard keyboard.

Browser

The browser for iPhone wins. It just renders so much more friendly and is a lot quicker.

Parental Controls

iPhone wins. There are some work arounds for Android to make it child-safe, but there still isn't an official "Parental Controls" functionality for the Android. Shame on them.

Conclusion

I like the Android a bit more. I'll be very excited for 2.2 to get to my phone, and then I wouldn't even be writing this blog because there would be no contest.

Inkheart review...

I saw Inkheart last night. It was good, but obviously not amazing. I liked the story, and the execution was well done. It certainly did feel what I call 'disnified,' which basically says that they put it together in a makeshift fashion, with cliche's and all. It reminded me of National Treasure, but with more of a fantasy twist. 2 stars * *

Fringe review

I am watching the 2nd episode of the series fringe, but so far, i'm not impressed. the biggest problem is the acting/casting. The characters take themselves too seriously. It remind me so much of Alias its frightening. I guess I shouldn't expect Lost everytime I see JJ Abrams' name on something. I plan to give it more time, but i don't expect too much. Who thought Joshua Jackson would be good in a part like this?
for the record: I'm using my android phone for blogging. the app is called androblogger. It doesn't use the normal self correcting typing that other apps do. Other than that, it's pretty good.

Terminator: Salvation...

I attended the 7:30 showing of the new Terminator movie, and I was thoroughly impressed! It was fun, intelligent, and action-packed. The acting was surprisingly wonderful. I felt it was very true to the other movies, with the exception of there being no f*** words. I thought the decision to go PG-13 instead of R was an excellent decision, and it's going to show in the box-office. Christian Bale as Jon Conner was fantastic! 3 and 1/2 stars.

EJB...What's the point?

I'm recently learning EJB at work, and am having a hard time figuring out the point of it. I'm thinking that its purpose is to have a standardized service-oriented architecture within Java. Why not make the service-oriented architecture even more abstract and usable across ALL programs and development languages and just use some web services? That certainly seems to be more standardized anyways. Oh well.

Conspiracy theorists...

At my semi-new job, I have a wonderful friend that is a conspiracy theorist. We have had many disagreements about the validity of his theories, and I am never closer to being convinced. The biggest problem with their logic is their idea of what 'proof' is. I ask them for a 'reputable' source from any type of media, and they can only show me stuff that other conspiracy theorists 'know' via their research. They say that there can't be proof from the media because the media are controlled by the bankers. Am I just to trust little tiny coincidences that 'make sense' in their minds? I don't believe that a group of people can be that smart or powerful enough to control the world that they suggest. The way the conspiracy theorists describe these controlling figures you'd think they were Gods or something. The bankers don't make mistakes (except for the few little things that don't add up that the omniscient theorists can see as blatant proof, but normal people can't). How depressing their lives must be; to think that we have no power over our lives and that we can't beat them except by overthrowing the federal reserve (a helpful institution).
Oh well, I guess I'll just keep trying to convince him.

A mormon's perspective of 'The Godfather'...

I finally watched The Godfather this last weekend, with of course editing by Clearplay. What a fantastic movie! I really enjoyed it, and didn't find the 3 hours in length to be boring at all. Now, I didn't see any of the sex or excessive violence, so I can't say that I enjoyed the whole movie objectively. But, I can say that it was a fabulous story, superb acting, and wonderful cinematography. It certainly does belong in the top ten films of all time.
